Snooper(TM), the System Checker
Copyright 1992, 1994 John Vias
SNOOPER'S REVISION HISTORY
VERSION DATE REVISIONS
3.30* 3/19/94 We have a new address! Please update your records
accordingly. Existing telephone numbers have not
changed, but we have added a dedicated fax line so you
can fax in your order. Our new address and fax line
are:
VIAS AND ASSOCIATES
75 SW 75 ST D5
GAINESVILLE FL 32607-1603
ORDERS: (800) 332-8234 (same as before)
FAX: (904) 332-4951
3.29 3/94 Added the feature you've asked for the most:
Auto-Logging! This command line option
(/A[B/D/E/L/N/O/S]) causes Snooper to log whatever
screens you want, automatically, with no user
intervention. This is perfect for gathering hardware
inventory for an entire network through a login script.
See SNOOPER.DOC for full details about how to use this
powerful feature.
3.28 3/94 Improved modem detection, making it faster and more
reliable.
3.27 2/94 Changed command line switches for increased similarity
with other programs and increased intelligibility. We
held off doing this so you wouldn't have to change
batch files and such, but we thought it was more
important to make this change now and make it easier on
everyone in the long run. If you have a batch file that
calls Snooper, and it used to run fine and now does
funny stuff, you probably need to update the command
line switches as follows. Snooper's help screen
reflects the new switches.
Old switch New switch
/BW /Mono
/Non-interactive /Batch
/MathChipSkip /NDPSkip
3.26 2/94 Added PCI bus detection and the ability to detect and
report both PCI and EISA in the same system.
3.25 2/94 Fixed a bug that improperly implemented file sharing on
networks.
3.24 2/94 In the CMOS screen, when you select a hard drive type,
Snooper will now better report user-defined and invalid
types. You can cycle through 255 types.
3.23 1/94 Removed "Hexium" detection, which returned false
positives on a few machines.
3.22 1/94 Added another command line switch, "/I[DESkip]" and an
associated config file option. This switch bypasses IDE
drive model checking, which a few machines aren't
compatible with.
Added another command line switch "/O[therIRQ]" and
config file option. This switch forces Snooper to use
an alternative IRQ testing routine. It is more
compatible with some systems but tends to be less
accurate, so if the default one works, use it.
3.21 1/94 Fixed a bug in the editor that caused lines containing
tildes ("~") in AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and
SNOOPER.LOG files to display incorrectly. Fixed another
bug that made the cursor disappear after the user
viewed the editor's help screen. Fixed another that
caused the editor's cursor to disappear if you enter
the editor again after saving a file.
3.20 1/94 Fixed Advanced Power Management (APM) detection.
3.19 1/94 Fixed a bug that prevented a few correct license
numbers from being entered. Sorry!
3.18 1/94 Fixed a bug that prevented the automatic use of
monochrome colors on monochrome video cards (MDA,
Hercules, mono VGA).
3.17 1/94 Both MS- and PC-DOS version 3.30 report they are
PC-DOS, so Snooper now reports 3.30 as "MS/PC-DOS
3.30." Also, Snooper will now report PC-DOS 6.10 as
such, even though that version reports itself as 6.00.
3.16 1/94 In reporting fax/modems on the Diagnostics screen,
Snooper will now only report classes over one. So if
you used to see "0,1,2" you will now see "1,2" (the "0"
only means "data modem" anyway, so it's implied).
3.15 1/94 Snooper will no longer automatically insert default
values in the CMOS (memory, date, etc.) if it finds
invalid values or an incorrect checksum. Doing so had
caused problems on a few machines that don't calculate
the CMOS checksum in the standard way.
3.14 1/94 Fixed a bug with the Benchmark screen that caused the
Video benchmark to be reported on the wrong scale if
you returned to the screen after running the benchmark.
For example, it would report 46 on a 100 cps scale
instead of 46K on a 100 K cps scale.
3.13 1/94 If a VESA driver reports the VGA card has 768K, Snooper
will report it as 1M, to avoid confusion.
3.12 1/94 Fixed a bug in the editor that turned the cursor off on
EGA systems. The cursor now stays on.
3.11 1/94 Added more computer types, including a couple Compaqs
and the IBM Thinkpad 750 laptop.
3.10* 11/17/93 Added Netware revision on network screen. It appears as
a letter after the version. Also on the Network screen,
fixed MLID version bug that would cause version 2.01 to
appear as 2.1.
3.09 11/93 Added Current Directory report to Snooper's disk
information.
3.08 11/93 Snooper will now accept long forms for its command line
parameters and switches, making Snooper batch files
self-documenting. It still accepts the single-letter
abbreviations. Because of this change, you may no
longer join command line switches. For example,
"snooper -bq" is no longer acceptable; you would need
to use "snooper -b q." See the manual and Snooper's
first help screen for more details.
3.07 11/93 Fixed the problem that caused Micro Channel systems to
lock up in the Diagnostics screen.
3.06 11/93 In the IDE Model report, if the drive is a Conner
Peripherals, Snooper now removes the word "Peripherals"
so the model name itself is visible in the report.
3.05 11/93 Fixed Pentium detection (it was reporting "Hexium").
Adjusted the Clock Speed report to better differentiate
between 60- and 66-MHz Pentiums (Pentia?). For CPUs
with integrated math coprocessors (i.e., the 486 and
Pentium), Snooper now reports "internal" instead of
"built in" for the NDP report.
3.04 10/93 Added detection of 400 more MicroChannel cards,
bringing the total to over 1,100.
3.03 10/93 On the Diagnostics screen, in the IRQ and DMA lists,
Snooper no longer reports "Reserved" for resources not
assigned to a hardware device. If the resource doesn't
appear to be reserved, Snooper reports "Available." If
the resource has been reserved, Snooper reports "In
use." Also, DMA channel four is no longer detected
because it is used internally and isn't available for
installable devices.
3.02 10/93 Removed CMOS checksum on the Main screen's Extended
Memory rep
